Wolfram Alpha is NOT a search engine. This information comes directly from Stephen Wolfram himself. Rather, it is a "fact search engine" or an "answer search engine". That is, instead of going to Google and looking up "cups in quart" to find a page on the web that will tell you how many cup are in a quart, WolframAlpha does the work for you. On the fly it combines the tasking of "searching" for the information and the compiling - or computing - the answer and then returning it to you.
